More Than 70,000 Expats Over 60 Will Have To Leave Kuwait In 2021

More than 70,000 expats over 60 will have to leave Kuwait in 2021 due to the entry into force of the new law. In fact, it prohibits foreigners of this age category from working.

This law is the final part of a series of measures aimed at reducing the dependence on foreign labor in the Persian Gulf country. According to the government, the work permit will only be renewed for one year for foreign workers who turn 58 and 59 years old.

A Gulf News source in the government commented on the law, which caused alarm among older workers and their families: "There is no going back, exemption or modifying this decision."

In June, Al-Sabah spoke of restoring the "imbalance" in the country.

“We are responsible for everyone who lives on this land and the residency trade has exhausted the state and the services in all institutions, especially when dealing with the current situation,” the Prime Minister said.

Following the announcement of the changes, the ministry clarified that "Those who hold a post-secondary diploma or higher are not affected by the new decision."

Some emigrant workers over the age of 60 will have to apply for a family residence permit, but they will nevertheless have to leave when this document expires.

Currently, expatriates employ about 3.4 million of the country's 4.8 million inhabitants.
