The US Economy Will Grow If The Country Issues Citizenship to Undocumented Immigrants

According to statistics, about 10.2 million immigrants live and work in the United States without documents. On average, they lived in this country for 16 years and have a family.

According to a poll among Americans, they support granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants. “And as the nation emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic and looks toward the future, legalization is a key component of a just, equitable, and robust recovery,” writes the Center for American Progress, which published the document.

The Center for American Progress and the University of California, Davis’s Global Migration Center have formed several proposals related to this issue for Congress and the Biden administration.

“Using an aggregate macro-growth simulation, the model illustrates the benefits to the whole nation from putting undocumented immigrants on a pathway to citizenship. Such legislation would increase productivity and wages—not just for those eligible for legalization, but for all American workers—create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and increase tax revenue"

In the prepared document, there are four possible scenarios for the development of events.

Scenario 1: Granting citizenship to all undocumented immigrants in the United States will increase US gross domestic product (GDP) by a total of US$1.7 trillion over 10 years and create 438,800 new jobs.

Scenario 2: Providing citizenship to undocumented immigrants who are essential workers would increase GDP by US$989 billion over 10 years and create 203,200 new jobs.

Scenario 3: The passage of the American Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6) will increase US GDP by a total of US$799 billion over 10 years and create 285,400 new jobs.

Scenario 4: Providing a pathway to citizenship for H.R. 6-eligible and undocumented essential workers will increase GDP by US$1.5 trillion over 10 years and create 400,800 new jobs.

In the presented analysis, only direct economic benefits are considered. The model does not account for the potentially large additional benefits for children of eligible immigrants in education, health care, and future productivity gains, as these effects are likely to manifest themselves more than 10 years after implementation.
